Improving the Use of Open Source Software

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much for the opportunity that has been given to me so I can stand here right now. In this special occation, I would like to deliver a speech entitle: Improving the use of open source software.

Let’s begin with the definition. Software is a part of computer system that consists of encoded information or computer instructions. Without software, a computer system won’t work properly. Then, what is open source software? Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose.  Open-source code is meant to be a collaborative effort, where programmers improve upon the source code and share the changes within the community.

From a business user perspective, open source software works in much the same way as proprietary software systems provided by commercial software firms – the only difference being that generally you don’t pay for it. However there are a few important differences – the idea behind open source software is that users are effectively co-developers, suggesting ways to improve it and helping to hunt out bugs and problems. This means that if you wish, you can modify it to your own needs, port it to new operating systems and share it with others.

What is the advantage of open source software? First, It’s generally free – it has been estimated that open source software collectively saves businesses $60 billion a year. Second, It’s continually evolving in real time as developers add to it and modify it, which means it can be better quality and more secure and less prone to bugs than proprietary systems, because it has so many users poring over it and weeding out problems. Third, using open source software also means you are not locked in to using a particular vendor’s system that only work with their other systems. And you can modify and adapt open source software for your own business requirements, something that is not possible with proprietary systems.

There are plenty of other open source alternatives for various paid applications. For example, operating system software. Windows can be replaced with Linux. Nortron/Kaspersky can be replaced with Avast!/AVG as antivirus program. Libreoffice to replace Microsoft Office as Office Suite. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox to replace Internet Explorer as browser. Gimp to replace Adobe Photoshop as Image Editing software, and many more.

In conclusion, there are many advantages to use open source software, you don’t have to pay to use it, and you can modified the software as you want. It is better to use open source software than using paid software illegally. Using open source software means you also reduce the number of crackers. So ladies and gentlemen, let’s begin using open source software. That is all what I can told you about open source software. Thank you for your attention.

In Pontianak, You Should Go to This Place

Hello guys, in this post I will share a little information about where you should go if you visit my hometown, Pontianak. Pontianak is a capital city of West Kalimantan. There many places to visit if you are here, but I will tell you about two famous places in Pontianak.

First, there is Equator Monument (Tugu Khatulistiwa in Indonesian). It is one of famous landmark in Pontianak. Why? Because it marks the division between the northern and southern hemisphere. If you want to visit this monument, you can find it at Equator road, North Pontianak. It is about 3 km from Pontianak city's center. The special thing about Equator Moment is the unique natural phenomenon in March 21 to 23 and September 21 to 23. In this moment, the object's shadow will disappear in a few moments. Wow it is like a magic.

Second, if you are hungry and don't know what to eat, you should go to Kwetiau Apollo. This place is opened in 1968 and has been in Pontianak for 48 years. It is pretty old right? It is located in Jalan Pattimura No.63, South Pontianak.  It serves a delicious kwetiau dishes, such as fried kwetiau. Fried kwetiau is special because it is served in a large portion and contains many beef. You will be full after eat a plate of this.

Last meal on earth? Hmm.. what is it?

Talk about last meal on the earth make us think about we are going to pass away soon. But you are not completely right, it can be the last produced meal on the earth or you can't eat it anymore. In this post, I will tell you about what I want to be my last meal on the earth in two version.

First, if it is the last produced meal on the earth I will choose steamed clams. I don't like clam because it is fishy. Even when the clam is dipped in a soy sauce or with lime, I still don't like it.

Second, if it is the last time I have a meal or I will pass away soon, I will choose to eat the most expensive meal in the world, a full course menu with gold knives and plates, diamond forks and spoons. It would be amazing if I can eat a meal like that. But if it can't be happened, I think even with a regular meal like bread will be delicious if we eat it with our family or the one that we love the most. Someone said that when you were in love, even a bitter coffee could be sweet, haha :D.

My Past, Present, and Future

Hello guys, nice to see you again. Because of an assignment, I have to write a letter to my younger self and to my 10-years later self. I am not good at writing letter, so I am confuse what to write, but if you can see this post right now, then the letter is already done and you can see it below this paragraph :D

Start with the letter to my younger-self. I will choose when I am still in elementary school.
"To my younger-self who hasn't known much yet, if you are happy the way you are right know then know something that happiness only last for a moment. Stop thinking about yourself and look around you, try to interact with others as much as possible because when you are not used to it, you will have a trouble later. And even your grade is very good, know that someone is always better than you. Don't be arrogant and slack off when you still have many time. Don't give up and keep going even when you are very tired of the situation. You still have your family who loves you and supports you, so try to make them proud. That is all what I have to tell you, see you."

And a letter to my 10-years self. That means in 2026.
"To my future self, how are you right now? Are you in a good shape or in a bad shape? If you're in a good shape and you are in process to achieve what you want, keep going and don't forget to learn and learn again, because the wheels are always spinning. But if you're in a bad shape, I'm very sorry, because it may be my fault. I will try to fix all my mistakes so you can be at ease. Don't give up just because you failed once, and try to express your feelings more. There are no humans who can be alone, so ask them for help if you're in trouble, don't face it alone. Thank you for this ten years for your blood, sweat, and tears. I hope you stay cheerful and keep your spirit up"

What Is My Favorite Karaoke Song?

Hi friends, nice to see you again. In this post, I will tell you about my favorite karaoke song. Actually, I seldom go to karaoke's place. I've only been there with my friends. That was a few years ago. One day, I and my friends went to mall to spend holiday.  Because it was afternoon and we hadn't eaten yet, we decided to eat first. After that, we walked around to see if there were new things there. Then, we went to play at the game center. Each of us spend Rp10,000 for playing. We played basketball, car racing, speed of light, and punching machine. We took turns for each game we played. It was very fun. When our cash almost ran out, we decided to use it at karaoke's room. There, we sang a few songs. The one that I liked the most was "Heal the World", a song from Michael Jackson's album Dangerous, released in 1991.

At first, I didn't know anything about this song and I had never heard it too. But when I listened to my friends sang this song, I thought that this was a good song. The song was easy to sing and I really liked the mellow tone of this song. Beside that, the song itself had a very good meaning. It was about how we as human should care for each other. Radio Listening Resume

I got an assigment from my lecturer to listen to radio on Thursday, December 1. The radio frequency is 103.4, Volare . I listened to Volare Chit Chat. Volare Chit Chat is an program that help us to learn English. The program last from 6.15 P.M. until 8 P.M. The program consist of 4 segments. First segment is How to Say It. In this segment, I learned about an idiom and how to pronounce the idiom. The idiom was "Read someone like a book". It means we knows someone so well or we always know what he or she thought. This idiom has a synonym "Read someone mind".  The example of this idiom use: "John's wife, Jenny can read him like a book, she knows when something troubles him and everybody knows that without her John is lost". The second segment is about Idioms. In this segment, the idiom that I learned was "Blood, Sweat, and Tears". It means we do something with full of struggle and hard work. The example of this idiom use: "There will be much blood, sweat, and tears, before we have completed this project". In this segment, a song with idiom was played. The third segment was Bilingual. In this segment, I listened to a two language news. The news I listened was about "70 metres biscuit dunk". It is about a 24 year's old tealover named Simon who jump off a 70 metres clank while holding chocolate biscuit. When the bungee reach its full extension, he dunk the biscuit in a cup of tea. The news was interesting. And the last segment is English, please!. The topic in this segment was "Idol Worship". There were 2 speakers, they were Array and Odi. Array said that he personally didn't really worship an idol, but he knew that idol is phenomenal in media. Odi said that he didn't worship them but he adored them. About this topic myself, I have a similar opinion with Array. I didn't really worship one too. But there are some people with talent that I have to say that they are awesome.

Favorite place I've traveled to

Hi guys, today I will tell you about my favorite place that I've been to. The place is Tekalong. For you who doesn't know, Tekalong is a village that is located in Mentebah, Kapuas Hulu, West Kalimantan. I've been to Tekalong twice in my life, that is when I was in Junior High School and Senior High School. I went there because of school activities that was required for all students to follow. My first impression when I went there, it was an amazing place. The air was good and cool. The view was beautiful and I really like it.

When I was there, I did a lot of activities. First I went hiking because Tekalong is surrounded by hills, so many tourist went hiking there. It was fun, because it was my first time and I liked hiking. The other activities that I did when I was there, I went to Tekalong's waterfall. The waterfall was pretty far from our place. I went there by walk, but that was okay because my fatigue was gone when I arrived there. The waterfall was amazing, the water was clean and very cold. I enjoyed my time there with my friends, playing and had fun together.

My First Smartphone Apps

Today I will talk about smartphone applications. As you know, smartphone is a mobile phone with an advanced mobile operating system which combines features of a personal computer operating system with other features useful for mobile or handheld use. To function the smartphone itself, we need applications created by programmer. Because of globalization and internet, now there are more than million applications can be downloaded and used by people.

There are many applications that I used, but I will talk about my first smartphone applications. What I mean by first smartphone application is the application that I installed when I just got a smartphone. It is the mobile version of famous social media, Facebook. I started using Facebook when I was in elementary school. I like it because Facebook is user-friendly, easy to use, and have many features.

Back to the smartphone application, I like the mobile version of Facebook. Although, the mobile version’s features are less than the website, but it is still good. We can access many thing from smartphone such as images and videos even without opening the website or using PC. It is very useful when we want to chat with friends and we aren’t in front of PC. We can access it anywhere and anytime if we have an internet connection.

Cool, Interesting, and Funny Movie : Pixels

Hello guys, it’s time to tell you another story. Today I will tell you about one of my favorite movies. It’s Pixel. It was released in 2015, but I have just watched it this year. There are many reasons why I choose this movie as one of my favorite movies. First, it has an interesting story. Why interesting? Because it tells about arcade games which become reality. Arcade games that we used to play in mall or amusement arcades such as shooter games, pac-man, and donkey kong become the challenger to human race. The earth is given three chances to overcome the challenges, if they can’t then the aliens will take over the earth.

Second reason why I like this movie is because the graphic is awesome. Like the title, the monsters such as the centipede, pacman, and donkey kong really look like pixels. What is pixels? They are elements of a picture or representation of the smallest point in a graphic image that is calculated per inch. Images and videos quality are based on the pixels ( resolution ).

The last reason is because this movie is very funny. I like the scene when the creator of pac-man met the pixeled pacman. He said that pacman is a good boy, and it will not hurt human. He was so sure because he was the creator. But when he stretched out his hand, the pacman bit his hand. Then he screamed and tell them to kill it. It is really funny, I laughed really hard. That’s why this movie is very good, and I recommend you who haven’t watched it to watch it now :D

I Can't Go Anywhere Without This Two Things

Hello everyone, today I will tell you about two things that I always bring wherever I go. First, it is my wallet. Do you know why I always bring it? Of course because it contains my money. As you know, when we want to buy something we have to use money, so I always bring some money in case I need it. Beside that, there are other important things such as identity card and driving license. Driving license is a prove that I have a permission to ride motorcycle ( actually it is for safety when I meet police :D ). In my wallet, there is ATM card too. So if my money in my wallet isn't enough, I can get it at the nearest ATM.

Second thing that I have to bring is my smartphone. I need it because it is a communication device, so if someone contacts me or I need to contact someone, I can easily call or message them. Beside that, I also use it to chat with my friend or to find information in the internet. Sometimes I use it to play games if I'm bored.

When I got this two things, I feel that I don't need anything else. If I'm hungry I can buy food with my money, If I'm bored I can play games or chat with my friend. So it is reassuring to have them.

My Favorite Selfie

Hello guys, today I will talk about my favorite selfie. As you see, there is desert behind me and it looks like I am in a high place. Where was I when I took the selfie? Check it out. About 3 months ago, I visited Malang, East Java with my friends. There, we planned to visit one of East Java tourist destination, Bromo Mountain. The next day, I woke up early at 2 A.M. to make preparations. Maybe you think why should I wake up that early? It is because of one of the good things from Bromo is the sunrise. From what I hear and maybe you too, the view of the sunrise is amazing and beautiful.

I arrived at Bromo’s viewing spot at 4 A.M. One thing that I can’t forget about Bromo is the temperature. It is very cold there. From what I hear, the temperature at the time was about 5 degrees Celcius. From the bottom, we walked to the peak. When we arrived, it was already crowded. There were almost no place to take a photo. When the sun rose, the view was very amazing. It was like an aurora but with orange color.

After that we decided to go to Bromo’s crater. We walked through the desert, climbed the hills and stairs, almost like an adventurers :D. After half hours, we made it to the peak. There were smoke coming out from the crater and the view from the peak was really amazing. There, I took the selfie with the amazing view from the peak of Bromo  behind me. That’s my story about my favorite selfie, thank you guys for reading my story. I will update more about me, so stay tuned :D.

5 Tenses That We Frequently Use

Today, I had an english course. The materials were about tenses. There are 16 tenses, but we discussed 5 tenses that we frequently use.

1. Simple Present Tense
   ~ Digunakan untuk menyatakan rutinitas dan fakta-fakta umum
   ~ Rumus :
        (+) S + V1 (s/es)
        (-) S + do/does + not + V1
        (?) Do/Does + S + V1 ?
   ~ Example:
        - They go to campus by bus
        - She goes to campus by motorcycle
2. Simple Past Tense
   ~ Digunakan untuk menyatakan kalimat yang terjadi di masa lampau
   ~ Rumus :
        (+) S + V2
        (-) S + did + not + V1
        (?) Did + S + V1 ?
   ~ Example :
        - She drank coffe
        - He didn't bring umbrella
3. Present / Past Continuous Tense
   ~ Digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung
   ~ Rumus :
        (+) S + be + Ving
        (-) S + be + not + Ving
        (?) Be + S + Ving ?
   ~ Example :
        - Aria and Linda were opening the account ( Past )
        - Reni is studying calculus ( Present )
4. Simple Future Tense
   ~ Digunakan untuk mengekspresikan kejadian yang belum terjadi, masih direncanakan, atau kejadian di masa yang akan datang
   ~ Rumus :

        (?) Will + S + V1 ?
   ~ Example :
        - I will study at American Corner next week
        - She will not make a cake
5. Present Perfect Tense
   ~ Digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang sudah terjadi dan hasilnya masih terasa/terlihat
   ~ Rumus :

        (-) S + has/have + not + V3
        (?) Has/Have + S + V3 ?
   ~ Example :
        - They have started the course
        - Has he done the homework?

My Reason For Choosing Computer System Study Major

Hello, ladies and gentlemen. Good to see you again. Today, I will tell you about the reason why I choose Math and Natural Science Faculty, Computer System Study Major, Tanjungpura University, Pontianak. At first, actually I want to learn about programming in high school, so I thought that I would enroll in Information Technology study major but I changed my mind. Why is that? Before that, I will tell you a bit of my story from the past.

When I was in first grade of Vocational High School, my school invited guests from Jakarta’s university. They wanted to teach how to program and introduced artificial intelligence to vocational high school students. At first, I wasn’t really interested and I thought it would be troublesome to join. But my friend persuade me to attend the seminar together, and eventually I agreed.

In the seminar the lecturers gave us an illustration about what will happen in the future. Human’s jobs would be done by robots and humans just need to control them. That’s when I thought, it would be cool if I could create one than using the robot which has existed. I dreamed that one day I would be a robot developer.

After that I began to search for a study major related to robots. That’s when I found that Computer System Study Major has a deep connection with robots which are called embedded systems. I continued my search to find which university has computer system study major. One of them is Tanjungpura University. That’s when I decided, this university will be my stepping stone to realize my dreams. And here I am, in this university.

The World Of University

Hello guys my name is Albert Stevan Yondra. I am a student of Math and Natural Science Faculty, Computer System Department, Tanjungpura University. It has been a week since my courses started and to be honest I feel tired. Why???

Because it is more difficult than I expected. In high school, all we have to do is wait. Wait for the teachers, wait for the lessons, wait for the schedules, wait for the announcements and the other things, then we start the learning and teaching process.

But not in the university, here you have to find your own schedules, information, and about the lecturers. At first, I was confused where and when I should find them. But thanks to the help of my friends, I managed to find them. We shared information and helped each other when one of us was in trouble. Since that, I knew that friends are really important in the world of university.

This week was our first meeting with our lecturer in each courses (some of them were the second :D). We started the courses by listening to the course's rules and contract. The lecturers also gave us information on what books should we have, their contacts info, and how to behave in asking question or permission. Each of the lecturer's rules is different, so we had to make a note or record the rules in our book.

Next week we are going to start our lesson, and I'm looking forward to it, especially in programming courses.
